February 11 marks the International Day of Women and Girls in Science. It was proclaimed in 2015 by the United Nations General Assembly with the aim of. <\/span>to promote gender equality and<\/b> equality between men and women and to achieve <\/span>greater participation<\/b> in scientific careers such as engineering, mathematics, etc. or computer science such as programming or ICT.<\/span><\/p>\n

\n<\/a> It is therefore essential to propose laws and measures to ensure that, in the future, more and more women will be part of this percentage and thus reduce the gap and inequality. This 2023 the slogan is <\/span>Innovate. Demonstrate. Elevate. Advance. Hold (I.D.E.A.S.)<\/b>.<\/span><\/p>\n

Sometimes, the lack of female role models can cause girls to become demotivated and believe that they will never be able to achieve the future of their dreams as scientists, inventors or researchers. From a young age, girls need role models to inspire them and allow them to see themselves as role models. That is why disclosure is so important. We must show them that they can achieve anything they set their minds to and show them that there are women who can achieve anything they set their minds to. <\/span>play a fundamental role in the world of<\/b> in the world of science, and that has been the case for a long time.<\/span><\/p>\n

We test at Smile and Learn<\/h3>\n

At Smile and Learn we have been able to <\/span>verify<\/b> that there are no significant differences in the results obtained by boys and girls in STEM activities. To do this, we have taken a random sample of 10,000 neurotypical students from Spanish schools between 6 and 12 years old who have completed STEM activities included in the Smile and Learn digital educational content platform.<\/span><\/p>\n

For the study, we divided the students into three age groups: 6 to 8 years old, 9 and 10 years old, and 11 and 12 years old. For each of the samples, we performed a fully anonymized Student’s t-test, the results of which reported no statistically significant differences in the performances of boys and girls.<\/span><\/p>\n

Women in science<\/b><\/h3>\n

Here are five women scientists whose inventions and discoveries changed the world:<\/span><\/p>\n

Ada Lovelace<\/b> (1815-1852). Ada Lovelace is considered the pioneer of computer science as she was the first person to develop computer code. Ada created the first computer algorithm in history, fundamental in the future development of programming and computer technology.<\/span><\/p>\n

Rosalind Franklin<\/b> (1920-1958). Rosalind Franklin was a biophysicist and crystallographer whose research was instrumental in understanding the molecular structure of DNA, carbon, viruses and graphite. Thanks to it, numerous advances have been made in the field of medicine in recent years.<\/span><\/p>\n

Emmy Noether<\/b> (1882-1935). Emmy Noether is considered the mother of modern mathematics since she was one of the driving forces behind abstract algebra and her theories made it possible to understand Einstein’s Theory of Relativity. She was also the first woman to give a speech at the 1932 International Congress of Mathematicians and the first German woman to earn a doctorate in mathematics and to be qualified to teach at the University of Erlanger-Nuremberg.<\/span><\/p>\n

Hedy Lamarr <\/b>(1914-2000). Hedy Lamar was a famous actress during the first decades of the 20th century and the inventor of a remote-controlled torpedo detection system using a frequency communication system for espionage purposes during World War II. Years later, the same was used as a model to create GPS and Wi-Fi waves. <\/span><\/p>\n

Marie Curie <\/b>(1867-1934). Marie Curie is considered the mother of modern physics. She was a pioneer in the field of radioactivity and the first woman in history to win a Nobel Prize for her discoveries. Together with her husband, she discovered radium and polonium and won her second Nobel Prize for being able to isolate pure radium.
